Cloud inversion is when the ground releases an abnormal amount of heat in the early morning hours, causing a layer of fog to be caught beneath a warmer layer of air above it. This is cause for a scene that could be straight out of Lord of the Rings or a horror movie like The Mist, and it is pretty amazing to witness.
